Premiership

FT: Hull City 0 Bolton 1

MATT TAYLOR struck the only goal of the game to condemn Hull City to a third consecutive defeat.

The Bolton midfielder netted with a left-foot shot five minutes into the second half afte
r Hull had failed to deal with a corner.

City poured forward in search of an equaliser but could not find a way past Jussi Jaaskelainen, who saved brilliantly from Marlon King and Geovanni during a late attacking onslaught from the Tigers that also saw captain Ian Ashbee shoot narrowly over in stoppage time.

Chances were at a premium in the first half but it was Hull who came closest to breaking the deadlock, Geovanni, by far the Tigers' most potent attacking threat, was once again the creator with a clever piece of skill on the left that ended with a flighted cross that King flicked acrobatically on to the crossbar.

Jaaskelainen was well beaten by the effort but, otherwise, neither goalkeeper was unduly tested in the opening 45 minutes.

Hull manager Phil Brown made just one charge to his starting line-up with Ashbee returning to the side after serving a one-game ban.

The City captain came in for Bryan Hughes but there was no place in the starting XI for Bernard Mendy despite his impressive impact from the bench at Manchester United in the Tigers' 4-3 defeat.

Hull: Myhill, McShane, Turner, Zayatte, Dawson, Boateng, Ashbee, Marney, Geovanni, King, Cousin. Substitutes: Duke, Barmby, Garcia, Mendy, Halmosi, Folan, Ricketts.
Bolton: Jaaskelainen, Steinsson, Cahill, Andrew O'Brien, Samuel, Muamba, Gardner, McCann, Taylor, Elmander, Davies.
Substitutes: Al Habsi, Smolarek, Helguson, Shittu, Basham, Sissons, Obadeyi.

EARLIER in the day, Arsene Wenger got the response he wanted as Arsenal bounced back from recent disappointments to defeat Manchester United 2-1 thanks to two goals from Samir Nasri.

Rafael da Silva, on as a substitute, volleyed home a late strike to give Sir Alex Ferguson's men some hope, but Arsenal held on through six minutes of added on time.

Wigan were held to a 0-0 draw by Stoke City at the JJB Stadium.

Championship

FT: Barnsley 1 Sheffield United 2

Sheffield United maintained their promotion challenge with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over South Yorkshire rivals Barnsley.

Two goals from James Beattie, the first a 20th-minute close-range header, the second an 84th-minute penalty, saw off a determined challenge by the home side, who pulled a late goal back Kayode Odejayi.

Passions had boiled over during a fractious opening half as both sides were reduced to 10 men.

Barnsley's Anderson de Silva and Sheffield's Ugo Ehiogu were dismissed for violent conduct in the 28th minute after appearing to trade head-butts in the home team's penalty area.

Referee Andy D'Urso had no hesitation in sending both men off, although Ehiogu protested at length he was the innocent party.

De Silva was subjected to a tirade of abuse by the large United contingent at Oakwell on the lonely walk back to the dressing room.

The incident marred a blood-and-thunder first period in which Beattie's close-range header gave United the lead after he latched on to a fine ball across the six-yard box by Danny Webber.

Beattie also drew a fine one-handed save by Heinz Muller, diving to his right, as United carried the greater threat going forward.

Barnsley's best chance fell to Martin Devaney, who headed narrowly wide from close range, although Hugo Colace drew a good save from Paddy Kenny on the stroke of half-time after connecting sweetly from all of 30 yards.

Moments later, Jamal Campbell-Ryce fired just over as Barnsley ended the half in sprightly fashion.

Beattie made it 2-0 in the 85th minute from the penalty spot before Odejayi pulled one back two minutes later for Simon Davey's battlers.

Barnsley: Muller, Hassell, Moore, Souza, Kozluk, Campbell-Ryce, Colace, de Silva, Devaney, Hume, Whaley. Substitutes: Mostto, Odejayi, Leon, Van Homoet, Rigters.
Sheffield United: Kenny, Morgan, Stokes, Beattie, Webber, Sun, Speed, Spring, Quinn, Naughton, Ehiogu. Substitutes: Halford, Cotterill, Kilgallon, Montgomery, Sharp.

FT: Sheffield Wednesday 1 Doncaster Rovers 0

Leon Clarke scored his second goal in as many games to end Sheffield Wednesday's five-match winless run in their South Yorkshire derby against Doncaster at Hillsborough.

Rovers had had the better of the opening exchanges three times going close, Matt Mills the closest with a free header.

Clarke twice spurned volleys before he finally scored on 42 minutes with a header from Etienne Esajas's free kick.

After the break, Rovers should have levelled but missed a number of chances, with Sam Hird and James Hayter the biggest culprits.

Sheffield Wednesday: Grant, Buxton, Wood, Beevers, Spurr, McAllister, Watson, O'Connor, Esajas, Tudgay, Clarke. Substitutes: Burton, McMahon, Johnson, Small, Sodje.
Doncaster Rovers: Sullivan, O'Connor, Mills, Hird, Roberts, Wilson, Spicer, Stock, Wellens, Woods, Price. Substitutes: Guy, Hayter, Heffernan, Greer, Elliott.

FA Cup, 1st Round

FT: Aldershot Town 1 Rotherham United 1

A last-gasp equaliser left Rotherham United facing an FA Cup 1st Round replay against a determined Aldershot Town.

Michael Cummins had broken the deadlock in a tight affair in Hampshire when he drilled in a 12-yard shot to give Rotherham the lead in the 54th minute.

But just as manager Mark Robins's side looked to be heading into the second round, they were left reeling when a 90th-minute John Grant penalty ensured Aldershot would earn a replay.

Aldershot: Bull, Straker, Blackburn, Day, Charles, Soares, Hudson, Harding, Davies, Grant, Hylton. Substitutes: Jaimez-Ruiz, Chalmers, Morgan, Elvins, Howell, Donnelly, Newman.
Rotherham United: Warrington, Nicholas, Sharps, Fenton, Mills, Tonge, Danny Harrison, Cummins, Rhodes, Broughton, Garcia. Substitutes: Cann, Reid, Barker, Yates, Taylor, Joseph, Hudson.

FT: Huddersfield 3 Port Vale 4

THREE goals in the last 11 minutes denied Huddersfield Town a place in the second round of the FA Cup when they went down at home to Port Vale.

The Terriers - under the caretaker watch of Gerry Murphy - looked to be cruising into the next round after going into a 3-1 lead.

But a late collapse saw their Cup dream disappear.

Murphy's latest stint as caretaker manager, following Stan Ternent's early exit earlier this week, began poorly when Louis Dodds pounced in the 27th minute to give the visitors the lead.

But, shortly before the break, Huddersfield were level through Michael Collins's strike.

It got better for the home side six minutes after the restart when Ian Craney made it 2-1. A two-goal cushion came when Gary Roberts's corner was met at the far post by Robbie Williams, who headed home in the 65th minute.

But the reasons why Huddersfield had suffered a bad start to the season surfaced again and the visitors ensured there would be a nervous last few minutes when they reduced the deficit through David Howland in the 79th minute.

The visitors then levelled through Dodds in the 85th minute before Marc Richards scored the knockout blow in the 90th minute.

Huddersfield: Glennon, Goodwin, Clarke, Butler, Williams, Roberts, Craney, Collins, Skarz, Holdsworth, Jevons. Substitutes: Kamara, Lucketti, Smithies, Cadamarteri, Beckett, Broadbent, Berrett.

Port Vale: Anyon, Griffith, McCombe, Collins, McCrory, Dodds, Howland, Brammer, Richman, Paul Edwards, Richards. Substitutes: Martin, Glover, Thompson, Davidson, Lawrie, Danny Edwards, Stockley.

FT: MK Dons 1 Bradford City 2

Graeme Lee's 80th minute free-kick stunned League One's MK Dons as Bradford City caused an FA Cup upset to reach the second round.

Omar Daley had given the Bantams perfect start when he fired them into a second-minute lead. Bradford were able to contain their League One hosts until shortly before the break when Jemal Johnson fired in a left-footed shot.

That's how it stayed until the 80th minute when Stuart McCall's side surprised their hosts through Lee's 30-yard stunner.

Milton Keynes Dons: Price, Stirling, Lewington, O'Hanlon, Wright, Johnson, Cummings, Navarro, Gerba, Leven, Belson.
Substitutes: Abbey, Llera, Gallen, Regan, Howell, Chicksen, Powell.
Bradford City: Evans, McLaren, Lee, Daley, Conlon, Matthew Clarke, Michael Boulding, O'Brien, Moncur, Law, Osborne.
Substitutes: McLaughlan, Heckingbottom, Arnison, Bower, Topp, Rory Boulding, Sharry.
