ROVERS striker Jason Roberts has started talks to secure his long-term Ewood Park future after revealing he is keen to extend his contract beyond 2010.

The former Wigan and West Brom front man moved to Lancashire in July 2006 on a four-year deal but is now hopeful a longer stay will be agreed “sooner rather than later”.

Roberts, 30, is Rovers’ joint top Premier League scorer this campaign with two goals from five starts as he continues to put his previous Ewood troubles behind him.

Only last January, the powerful striker had a transfer request turned down by Rovers following a lack of first-team action but is now contemplating committing his latter years to the club.

He said: “We have been having conversations and hopefully something will be concluded sooner rather than later.

“From my point of view, I am happy at the club, we have a great bunch of lads and looking forward to an exciting season.

“My contract does not run out until 2010 but I see no reason to leave and so would love to sort something out for longer.

“Early talks went well and we will be meeting again soon to get all the details sorted hopefully.”

Roberts moved to Rovers from Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed fee in July 2006 but his first season was disrupted after breaking a bone in his foot in October.

He returned with five goals in the last six games but again found himself out of favour the following season.

Starting the last eight games of the 2007/08 season transformed Roberts’ Ewood Park career though and he has carried on in similar fashion this time round.

Paul Ince’s new 4-2-3-1 formation has left him having to settle for a place on the substitutes bench in recent weeks but an injury to Roque Santa Cruz could hand him a fresh chance at Bolton a week on Saturday.

He said: “That is modern day football. You always have three or four players pushing for every position and it is difficult to get a run.

“I am always happy when I am playing but when you are not all you can do is work hard.”

A number of Roberts’ Rovers team mates are expected to follow suit in the next couple of months with several contracts expiring in 2010.

He is very good at holding the ball and better than the two REJECTS that new manager Charlie has bought in..

wasn't the charlie jibe aimed at Robbie Fowler by the United fans? Who, might I enquire are the two rejects? If you mean Fowler and Andrews then I would ask if you attended, a) the carling cup game and b) the fulham match.

Oztheman, you really aught to give up your grudge concerning Ince. Otherwise you're just going to look very silly.
Bluerover is correct. Fowler and Andrews haven't let anyone down so far. Andrews looks a good buy and Fowler, much as I had my early reservations, was in good shape when he made his appearances

90 games and no goals in the championship was seated on the bench most if the time anyway..both at teams who didnt make it to the premiership..HULL AND WOLVES..one did once they got rid of him to a team 2 divisions lower..as a season ticket holder what has impressed you about andrews that he can run?apart from that telegraphed passes has yet to stop the ball and turn direction of play yet to make a 25 yard plus pass to his own player and yet to shoot on target..against fulham he went off we scored and he was not includued against everton home and newcastle away..but if you love him then do I just think VOGEL is a class apart..an international to one who has NEVER KICKED a ball for his country..

Roberts could be as good a menace as Heskey - he has all the atributes. Ince just needs to find the place in his backside that you stick a Rocket up after every few games!
Ewood is going to be half empty for the Sat tea home game against Boro. Why don't the club announce now a £5 adult ticket and kids free. Let fans down the pub see somthing positive like a full stadium and great atmosphere rather than a dead half empty ground.
Will Rayzers dad (Mr Williams)please waken up and remember when he reduced prices last season it worked!

lots of us have made comments about sad Tottenham..too many teams have gone down after 6 games lets hope the last laugh is NOT on us..Ince needs to get a life 7 years out of the premeirship means all he talks about is himself brings players who were on the bench in the division below whilst he played and his team only once got promoted once let the EGO go or he is going to make us look like a big time charlie and keeping other internationals happy ask a very happy C.V. and class midfielders like VOGEL AND TUGS

Only ppl who call Ince big time charlie are man u fans so are u coming out OZTHEMAN. Ince doesnt have alot of money to spend and will buy players that he feels will enhance rovers at the end of day he doesnt want to fail and he more than most gets the spot light put on him. Ince gets enough grief off newspapers making stories about problems at ewood without someone like u moaning at him. If he was such a big time charlie would he have gone to work in the lower leagues to learn his management trade, and gone to blackburn when he could ahve waited for so called bigger clubs to take him on. Ince managed to fend off interest and signup Santa cruz on a longer deal would somebody who is a so called big time charlie been able to do that not every likely as players woudlnt want to play for him. We are currently mid table above teams like ciuty spurs everton who where all expected to be above us right now. Give Ince the chance to get his team playing the way he wants and stand by him. Insulting him isnt giving him a chance even if u dont like the guy he still deserves to the chance to mnanger our team and prove himself.

bringing in rejects who are his close friends is NOT going to improve us..when his friend went off against Fulham WE scored if his friends mean more to him than the likes of VOGAL and our own 7 yr hero TUGAY he is sadder and a bigger charlie than what fergie says..his friend has NEVER scored in the championship in over 90 appearances.. besides run, he cant close play like AXE or VOGEL cant change the direction of play, and cant pass to more than 10 yards.. in the 3 games I have seen him.. What do you love about the ex division 2 player?do you think he will score for us?and the worst thing is we get £30 million and say were poor wonder where the money for the sale of NOT just bentley friedle and hughes, city must have paid, but all those in seasons before who have used us as a stepping stone..

take away roque's, benni mc, warnock, samba's, emerton, pedersen, roberts, nel
son, ooijer, etc etc wages we could all get in for free, how many will turn up then?
just a question for you, in two weeks time when the gates are open for this low price that you are advocating against middlesborough will you be bothered to actually come down and watch?
i know that youve got a beef with williams but weve heard it all before.
if prices were the only thing that stopped people going to games then whenever we played cup games or other games outside the PL were the prices are reduced we would be sold out according to your logic, i cant remember when we got above 18K for those games.

because williams has already started the revoulution..new cheap and fantastic players that are not even wanted in the division below..he is saving wages just get rid of charlie put parkes in and he and us may still have a top 8 side left other wise good players cant carry rubbish around for too long.thats what they are forced to do under Charlie with his friends..

Morst, before you were moaning at Williams for spending no money, now we've spent some over the summer, your now moaning that williams wont sell tickets for a fiver, even though not 1 club in the 4 english divisions sell tickets at such a rediculous price.

Even if Williams did let us all in for free, and stump up cash for £20m players, you would still find something else to winge about.

We are a small town club, face it, Blackburn only has a population of 105,000. what makes you think 25% of those people would want to go and watch rovers on a Saturday anyway, regardless of the price?

Before you start saying, well we were selling out prior to 2000, yes we were, but that was largly down to the glory hunters following us ahead of united, and we were a top 4 side.

The sole reason for a drop in attendances was due to the relegation from the premier league. The glory hunters, who followed us due to JW's money have never come back, to watch the mid table years. If we were still a top table premiership side, I could garentee we would sell out every week, charging £30 a ticket.

MJ Rover, Blackburn says...

Why should ticket prices be lowered? Season ticket holders have stumped up their cash at the beginning of the season and shown their loyalty to the club by buying tickets for every home league game. Why should they get ripped off to try and appeal to some fair-weather 'supporters' with cheap tickets?

I agree that the glory hunters were a large reason for our full-houses back in the 90s. Not only that, but how many Man U, Newcastle, Liverpool fans were there in the Rovers end at those games back then? A game against Rovers was an important game for them back then - one that fans wanted to see. Now we're more like just another game.

As for Andrews and Fowler - neither have let the club down nor looked out of place so far. So what if they've been 'rejected' by lower league sides in the past. It's how they play now, at Rovers, that matters. I couldn't give two hoots how Andrews played at Wolves or Hull. He's doing ok now. Whilst I am surprised how Vogel has been frozen out of the first team picture, I trust Ince's judgment on midfielders - if he thinks Vogel isn't up to it, then that's his opinion.

Keep up the good work Ince!

OK Guys. As you sit in the stand vs. Boro and look out at all the Empty Seats and dead atmosphere then will you realise what a great message we are sending out to players, prospective players, prospective fans & investors etc. What a waste of Uncle Jack’s stadium when all those seats are paid for and debt free - bet Uncle Jack would not have let it happen.
Ossy / MR - If they make Boro £5 yeas I will go! I said Andrews could have paid for a 5% price reduction - no one else.
Of course this is short term. I would have started this way back in 2001 / 2002 when Rovers returned to the Premier League and won the League Cup. Gates were very high then too and we needed to build on that with a family orientated siege mentality of us as a small town club against the rest.
We have a unique problem in population density which is why I say we would have been better with lower prices and higher gates for the same revenue.
I don't think comparisons to cheap cup-ties are relevant Ossy - football is a habit for most and you don't just switch on for one game especially when it is not Premier League. Fans need to know they will not be told - "sorry you’re to poor" come the big games as well. That's why you need low walk on prices as well as STH's as they are different markets.
None of you have admitted that last season's price reductions were a success and proof of the pudding - why?
All I can say is if this strategy had been introduced several years ago Ewood would have been fuller of home fans and income levels would be the same if not higher.
No way would Jack Walker have sat back and let his stadium be so empty. But it may be too late now as several thousand of those fans left between 2002 and 2007 and many may not return because they have lost the habit. My strategy of low prices for all would be aimed at bringing back that "Habit" whilst still making at least the same income if not more through knock on shop sales etc.
In short the aim is to fill those 10,000 seats on a regular basis rather than them being empty and the bonus benefit would be an improved atmosphere for all. Can't see what you see wrong with that?

Surely one of the reasons that non-committed supporters don't venture down to Ewood is the likelihood of being surrounded by whingeing, moaning, pessimistic, doom-laden so-called fans.

Ossy / Mike Rover - OK forget the Championship season. What about 2001 in Division 1? 27,000 vs. Shef Utd and near 30,000 sell out against Portsmouth with 99% of home fans. Compare that to 4,500 empty seats vs. Man U when they had 4 players costing £30m and the second best player in the world on the pitch.
The potential demand is there but without getting too much into Economics Rovers need to find the point where the supply and demand curves meet at say getting 22,000 - 25,000 home fans on Ewood and see at what price that is (with away fans that should see 26,000 - 29,000 average which would generate a great atmosphere.
As long as the result is like last seasons 25% reduction, we achieve the same or more level of revenue then are we not better to have Ewood near full and all the benefits that go with that?
Ossy - also you should remember you argued with me about this before but when they did try the 25% reduction last year it was a success so before you call me a kn*bhead (even though I take it in fun!)You should perhaps take the fact I was right into account. I only suggest things that I believe will benefit Rovers and if it worked last time why not try it?
The alternative seems to be an half empty stadium vs. Boro. This is the sort of game (usually 2 or 3 a season only) for which all the lights are flashing - unattractive opposition, poor away support, Tea time kick off not popular, on live TV in pub etc etc. So why not respond positively to turn it round?
Yes Ossy if it was £5 adult and free for kids with adult I would buy a ticket and would be prepared to be persuaded to get the habit back if prices were better long term on a steady basis. Obviously they could not be £5 average this is just a one-off suggestion to get a positive atmosphere for this game. But the club could try to find the price at which they could get Ewood 90% full.
At the very least it is time for John Williams to admit the 10% increase was a really bad idea and immediately return match prices to last season. There cannot be many fans bought season tickets after April 30th so give them a club shop voucher or reduction next season if required. After the success of last season’s price reduction it is a shame Williams failed to take it forward this year and build on it.
