Keane takes a swipe at Arsenal and Chelsea

SUNDERLAND, England (AFP) - Sunderland Roy Keane has accused Arsenal and Chelsea of poaching top youngsters rather than developing their own talent.
Keane believes Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger's reputation for turning rough diamonds into polished gems is undeserved because he brings in talented teenagers from other clubs at home and abroad rather than working with players from Arsenal's own catchment area. The former Manchester United star is convinced Chelsea do the same, while Sunderland struggle to lure young talent to the Stadium of Light because of their location. "The word on the street is they (Arsenal) have a group of kids coming through that will be absolutely outstanding," Keane said. "But you go on about the kids coming through but a lot of them have been bought from other clubs, not through the academy at Arsenal. It's the same with Chelsea." Wenger paid big money to sign Theo Walcott from Southampton as a 17-year-old and also splashed out on Cardiff's teenage midfielder Aaron Ramsey this close-season, while Cesc Fabregas was lured from Barcelona's youth system. Chelsea have also poached a number of young players from other clubs' academies, notably Leeds United duo Michael Woods and Tom Taiwo. "We have tough battles up here in terms of signing young players and are restricted in terms of our location," Keane added. "You can only bring in kids from a certain radius and a lot of our radius is in the water. Any good fish out there?" |

I was thinking, here would be an article I could criticise Roy Keane on....but upon reading it, he is close to correct, not in talking about criticising the big clubs but that these clubs need to develop their own talent.Funny:

this is a defeated man's cry, what of man.utd, where did Ronaldo, Ronny, Tervez, Nani, Evra, Anderson etc came from, why didnt he mention man utd? Again can R. Keane play a young player let Arsene Wenger does, grow up Keane, you are not at man utd again and you can never be Arsene Wenger by criticising him. He is more then you are 100%. don't destory your young coaching work okay!Cile_car October 9th, 2008 19:11
Well Roy, I believe you have enough power to lure youngsters from all over Britain and even Ireland and that should be enough to at least bring your club to the next level!rawadkhalil October 9th, 2008 19:12
samwise is right. all teams that cant buy good talent blame the big teams for buying all talents.its like ther/re asking for financial aid from these teams in an indirect way.

You all aren't from England! You are absolutely wrong: you just want someone to root for while you are hundreds and hundreds of miles away and Keane knows, he was one of Bandwagon United's biggest players.Escape_to_Victory October 10th, 2008 02:22

I think a lot of you are missing Roys point here, all he is saying is that the praise Wenger has received over the years for his youth policy maybe a little unjust!Guuner66 October 10th, 2008 14:19
well lets be honest. Roy keane would not play those teenagers anyway. Wenger does! and they do become polished diamonds. point is if you r going to whine about it then get your own youngsters and keep them. these youngsters are by no means polished products when they do move to the big clubs they still have to moulded.DINOZOFF October 10th, 2008 23:09
What is the man going on about? He needs a few more pints on Grafton Street to get to reality!! He is a real Fancy Boy!!SoccerwayHooligan October 11st, 2008 03:41
